    Tips for defenseman

Just want to add some gameplay help to this sub. You may not want it or need it. A lot of this is common sense, so this is mostly for new players to help in difficult situations. With christmas around the corner and an NHL discount on the horizon, hopefully some new guys will find this useful.

Doesn't matter if you're playing 6s or 3s, sometimes as a D you'll find yourself in an odd-man situation. When that happens:

    1. Check the handiness of the puck carrier

    2. What side of the ice are they one?

    3. Understand what the "cheese" goals - cut to the middle and short side snipe, forehand backhand, one-timer, one-handed tuck.

    4. Tendency of the puck carrier and team. How often have they attempted short side snipes? Forehand-backhands? etc...

If the puck carrier is right handed and on the right side of your screen they can realistically do three of the 4. You want to stay patient. The worst thing you can do is go for a big hit and miss or have him pass it over giving the other guy an easy scoring chance.

    In this scenario,

    1. Make sure you're holding LT and skating backwards if you have it set to auto then don't worry

    2. Keep the play in front of you, don't let the puck carrier speed past you. If they are speeding past you, then work on getting in better position from the get go. You'll have to bail and thwart a forehand backhand attempt.

    3. Aggressively play one side, try not to stay in the middle, in no-man's land. By playing one side aggresively (playing the pass, for instance), they may think they only have two options (short side snipe and forehand backhand).

    4. As they get closer they'll decide on one of the two. If they begin to cut to the middle at the top of the circle, you can interfere with the shot attempt and take away their scoring chance. If they don't and begin to the cut to the middle closer to the net, they'll attempt a forehand backhand and at this point, you should be inching closer and within reach to get a stick on it or bump him off the puck. If they never cut to the middle they're going to pass and you're already in a good position to intercept the puck.

Even better with a human goalie and communication since they can take away the short side.

    1. If you play the puck carrier aggressively, you can bail towards the open man and thwart the pass attempt with ease since.

If the puck carrier is on his opposite hand. Right handed puck carrier on the left side of your screen, it's better. They can't do much at all other than pass because if you'll be in a position to intercept a one hand tuck or at least interfere with it unless they've already sped past you.

They won't be able to go short side snipe or forehand backhand.

Obviously, more skilled players are more inventive, so these tips are mainly for beginners.

Here is an example of a guy on his off-hand. I baited him into passing it twice, knowing that he can't score from that side of the ice on his off-hand. This was based off of what I've seen during the game.

another thing, especially in 6's is zone entry. Challenging them at your blue line as they transition to your zone is by going for a big hit along the boards can be dangerous and not advised for new players.

    1. You can be aggressive, but don't go for the big hit.

    2. Keep your man in front of you and to the side of the boards.

    3. Allow your wingers and/or centerman to take out the puck carrier if he cuts to the middle

    4. If he takes it down the board, you can attempt a hit, but doing so at the blue line in transition can lead to an odd-man rush. Only after he has committed to go down the boards can you go for a hit, so long as you're close to him already and in front of you.

Really, just small things can help new players the most

I typically don't like playing D, but it's the most critical position on the ice besides goalie. And doing so will allow you to get more ice time in leagues since they're always looking for D, or find more full lobbies.

The most important thing is to play D.Everyone wants to be Dahlin or Karlsson, but remember your responsibility.

I guess I know why the refs lost sight of the puck. (They had something else to look at)

NHL 20 Patch 1.40 turned this game into NHL 19

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:23 AM PST

Is there any way to revert to 1.30? With 1.40 this game lost its drive and speediness. Shit.

Franchise Mode: What is the most realistic sim scoring engine?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:24 PM PST

That's basically the question. I tried running the first third of the season on high and the other two thirds on medium but I want to commite to one. I find that medium ist more realitic than high, but it might be a tad to low espacially when you consider the insane amount of scoring this nhl season. But I think high is a little over the top. What setting do you play on?

Not Really Worth Your Time... But Why Can’t Women Fight?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 09:17 PM PST

I thought it would be hilarious if my create a character could fight... I was disappointed to find out that wasn't the case.

I'm just wondering if women players will fight other women?

What's the main difference in the Franchise mode/GM mode? Is it just a newer roster and a change to the scouting for the draft?

No Snoop commentary in drop-in games? Or is there something I'm supposed to do to activate it?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 08:31 PM PST

(Snoop showed up eventually. He just takes his time I guess.)

What are you supposed to do against this? This last second game-tying shot teleported into the goalie's glove.

Can female players fight in NHL 20?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 03:53 PM PST

Asking for a friend because I would totally use a female player to negate the fight prompt that has popped up when laying out a D-man, who then goes on a breakaway afterwards. Only to have that breakaway taken away because the game forces a fight with a prompt that the other team can accept.

Does anyone else notice how often stand-up goalies go into the butterfly?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 06:49 PM PST

Does anybody else notice how often stand-up goalies go into the butterfly? I have Sawchuk as my goaltender and even before the shot comes, he is in the butterfly. You would think a stand-up goalie would at least wait till the shot comes. Not that it matters. Every card is the same just with a different number usually in the 80s or 90s in the corner.

I just went to update and it did a re install.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 06:15 PM PST

Well shit. I tried to update NHL 20 and it just reinstalled the game. Pretty sure this wasn't me, or an operator error. Just wondering if this happened to anyone else?

Honestly, Snoop should replace Ray Ferraro

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 12:01 PM PST

Ray Ferraro tries too hard to be a funny man and I'm tired of hearing his stupid quips everytime I miss a shot or I am down in shots. Ray and James have very little chemistry as commentators. However, Snoop is funny as hell and actually makes it enjoyable.

Anyone knows how to make stickhandling feel faster?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 05:48 PM PST

Idk, i just feel like the game feels so slow paced. Even when I play players like mcdavid the stickhandling just feels really slow, going left to right for example and also sometimes making quick turns and such.
i dunno what settings to change.... Also I dont notice a huge diffrence when i use a guy with 93 speed to 85 speed for example...

    Any tips?
