People here are too hard on the EA Vancouver developers

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 09:53 AM PDT

For this topic I have the convenient combination of being a game development engineer with experience working on AAA games, a real life hockey player, and a person who has played the EA NHL series perennially for a LONG time.

My experience in the industry leads me to believe that the problems those of us on this subreddit (aka. the hardcore demographic) have with this series are essentially unsolvable and that any solution would be complicated or not feasible.

Regardless of that, though, the hate that people throw at the developers is nuts. Personally, I TRY to listen to the community for the games I work on, but the way that people give feedback about video games on social media makes it REALLY fucking hard to do that sometimes. This subreddit community is one of the worst I have ever seen.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the frustrations and agree sometimes, but I think they need to be put in perspective.

    The Problem

I'm sure many of you know this deep down, but the problematic cycle is basically that:

    1. EA Vancouver doesn't get a ton of resources for NHL, so they can only do so much in a certain time span. This is a huge oversimplification, but if you start at the release date and then account for post-mortem time on the current release, maintenance on the current release, pre-production and design, prototyping new features, different QA stages, and time spent in console TRC and disk manufacturing, you are left with very little resources for actual substantial changes to be made each year. For reference, on other AAA titles, (even direct sequels where the engine and gameplay change very little) pre-production/prototyping can take up to 2 years alone.

    2. The lack of demographics interested in the game (and this sport tbh) means that nearly all development is focused on things that will either increase revenue from current users (aka. HUT), or attract new users with flashy meaningless crap (stuff like "crushing hit reactions!" or "new team celebrations!" lol). So that really allows for almost no time to be spent on fixing old/low priority bugs, redesigning UI to fix frustrations, innovating, improving the core gameplay, etc...

    3. From what I can tell, the game hits projections in revenue every year. As a result, EA allocates the same amount of resources as it did the previous year to the NHL project.

    4. Go to step 1.

    The Hate

So what are the frequently said things people seem to throw out here?

    • "The developers are stupid" - This is such a weird thing that I see with video games for some reason. The developers are doing their job as directed by the producers. No AAA developers are writing bug free code with perfectly balanced mechanics on their first pass. Producers dictate how much time is spent on polish, balance, and bug fixes, and if you don't follow that schedule then you are a bad developer.

    • "The producers are assholes" - Again, this is another silly scapegoat. The producers are doing their job as directed by higher ups and/or directly by the publisher. If they don't focus on the features the publisher wants then they are a bad producer (and the studio might get dropped).

    • "The publisher is evil" - And finally, to complete the trilogy, the final unfair scapegoat. The publishers are doing their job as mandated by the executives. If they don't drive the game to focus on generating revenue then they are bad at their job and ultimately will make the CEO look bad in front of the shareholders (who are ultimately "in charge" and PROBABLY don't care about the games at all). If you think all of that sucks then yeah, publicly traded corporations aren't perfect. This is how they work though and no single person in the entire chain is responsible.

Like, I get it, the game isn't perfect. You know it, I know it, and EA Vancouver knows it.

Personally it's good enough for me to buy and play hundreds of hours every year and I assume that's the case for MOST of the people here. You can (and should) complain about things you don't like and provide feedback however you can, but the toxic vitriol and hate that gets thrown at the developers is naive and kind of immature.

    TL;DR:

Bad Feedback: The developers of this game are stupid.
Constructive Feedback: I don't like playing goalie and this is why:

    ...

    Bad Feedback: EA is evil
Constructive Feedback: I wish EA would focus more on EASHL than on HUT.

    ...

Bad Feedback: Wow EA, fix your garbage physics system. I'm never buying this game again because of this.
Constructive Feedback: I just got this crazy glitch

    Started playing NBA 2k20

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 10:05 AM PDT

NBA 2k20 is the free game of the month for PS4. Started playing it and holy shit we need NHL 2k back. The amount of detail and options in this game are insane. If this stuff was in NHL I would never stop playing.

Obviously the presentation is amazing and gives it a real televised game feel but also the MyLeague is leaps and bounds better than Franchise mode. So much control over your team (and others if you wish). You can even download user created teams for expansion or team name change. You can make any team. There is a basketball team version of my Washington Capitals that you can download. It is absurd and insulting how much better it is. When can 2k make a game? Will they??

    CR averages W/L

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 06:19 AM PDT

How are competitive ratings averaged? I have never been able to get higher than 10 when I win, and when I lose, it'll drop by -7,-8. Is this the CR glitch many people are referring too? I'll beat guys that have double the CR and get +7 almost every time.

How is this possible?! My team is 53-6-4 at the trade deadline!!!

Is the third the easiest or the hardest?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 03:27 PM PDT

Oh it's the hardest... you never know if you're gonna get another opportunity.

Does creating a franchise automatically create a save file for it? I tried saving a new file and it says no more files available. Will I overwrite my other franchise if I say overwrite if I have t saved it yet?

Who will be on the cover?!

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 01:46 PM PDT

Seeing how by this time every year we know who's on the cover on that years NHL game, share in the comments who you think will be on the cover.

Personally I think it'll be MacKinnon

I can also see it being Seth Jones

And if they wanted to do a deluxe edition they could call it the "hall of fame edition" and put Iginla on the cover of that, just a thought.

    Name for Sacramento Team?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 02:33 PM PDT

Top two would mirror the colors of the California flag, bottom two would be some combination of purple, black, and gold. Any suggestions for colors and anything else is welcome! If this goes well I may be back for some more opinions for other cities

Why is it taking so long to announce NHL 21? PC addition maybe?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 01:46 PM PDT

The other two games like FIFA and Madden have announced it well.

Will we maybe see it on PC? I haven't played NHL for 12 years now since 09, I would be so pleased if I could play it again.

Last year one NHL Canadian Indian developer like my comment about adding it on PC's I thought this might be our year, but nothing happened, I was so mad. What do you guys thing is it possible?

It's aswell incredible how the developer team of NHL is dog shit, sorry for my vocabulary, but I've seen how the last game is buggy, and literally the comments are full of costumer advices and proposing for fix, there is no other game that needs to be that much fixed as this one.
