My drop in experience as goalie and toxicity

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 07:37 PM PST

I have been spending the past few nights playing goalie in Drop Ins and generally have a 0.800 or higher save % which is probably fairly decent for playing with randoms. I just played a game with 20+ shots against and gave up 5 goals, 4 of the 5 were 2-0 one timers that I had no chance against because my team barely played any defense. I also stopped 4 or 5 clear cross crease one timers with desperation saves to keep things close. We lost 6-3 on an empty netter. Toward the end of the game, one of my teammates jumps on the mic to tell me I should never play goalie again. Made me feel like absolute dog shit.

I'm thinking there is no joy to be had playing goalie even if you are pretty good at it. No one gives a shit if you make a great save. If the team loses and has a human goalie, he's the only one who gets blamed for giving up a goal.

    Custom Teams

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 01:08 PM PST

I am making a custom ice hockey league with custom teams, and i will be needing more names and colours of teams. If anyone would like to submit a team name then I will put it in. (The league is primarily UK and west European)

EA should sell the rights to make NHL games

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 01:01 PM PST

I'm not sure if this is a common sentiment. We all know these games have taken a huge dip in quality over recent years. Nothing changes from year to year except rosters, another clunky menu ai, and some extra EASHL modes.

The thing is, I don't blame the development team that makes these games. They're told by higher ups in EA that they need to make a new game, but because sales haven't been doing as well, so they don't have enough money to make a better game next year - which doesn't sell and there we have the cycle we've seen recently.

That team doesn't have the resources to make the game we want because EA management doesn't allocate them. EA as a company is capable of making good games. (Think Battlefront, Battlefield). They have just stretched themselves too thin to the point where they can't really do anything but the bare minimum for their yearly releases. They make too many games for 95% of them to be any good.

I think we all have a certain nostalgia for EA NHL games from our childhood, but this is hardly the same company it once was. This is why EA should sell the rights to make NHL games to a studio that can actually focus on it.

Either that, or just release a game every other year that has actual improvements. Update the rosters and I'd be fine waiting another year just so we can have the $60 price point be marginally worth it. This game doesn't need to be an annual release if that means actual progress.

Will we ever get that? I doubt it. EA loves that they're the only ones making a hockey game. We don't have a choice but to buy their garbage just for the updated rosters. Mm aren't we excited for the 3 new shooting animations next year?

Think about it like this. Let's say you bought NHL 14 as your first one. You love it, and decide to buy every year's game until now at release. From 14-21, you will have spent $420 (nice) buying every game. For what? $420 for some extra modes, clunky new Be a Pro? What we have now is an arguably worse game than 14 but with shiny new graphics. We don't even have GM connected after all these years.

Imagine this game being made by a group that actually cares about the product they put out. It seems like a pipe dream.

TL;DR: If EA is going to stay as the only company to produce these games, they should take their time to make a game worth the money. If not, sell the rights to a company that can. NHL 14 was the last one to even come close to being worth $60.
