    NHL 21 is fuuuuuunnn!

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 02:58 AM PDT

My first NHL game since 18. I'm really enjoying the advanced AI, where your team pulls the goalie when you're down, even if you don't have the puck in your own zone.

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 09:45 AM PDT

Props to EA, this is the first time in years goalie has felt this responsive and fun to play!

EA should've built on Live the Life, which in my opinion, is still hands down the best Be a Pro experience we've had

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 06:58 AM PDT

Yeah, Live the Life wasn't perfect, but it was a great start and had a lot of promise. The text based interview and scenario stuff was surprisingly deep, and kept me entertained for many seasons. For example, immediately roasting the team that drafted you in an interview would get you traded. There were lots of different dialogue scenarios, so it wasn't even that repetitive.

Here's some of the good features I can still remember from Live the Life:

    • Being able to ask a trade, and getting punished if you asked repeatedly. The GM would also say funny things like "we're considering trading you for a washing machine" when he was angry.
    • Being able to retire at any time.
    • You could be sent down to AHL if you played poorly.
    • Getting interviewed accurately after signing with your old team or if you signed with a new team, "Why did you decide to stay in .... team?"
    • Legacy milestones, being able to break Gretzky's, Lemiux's, and others' records, and getting recognized.
    • Free training, being able to just shoot around with your pro in free training.
    • Being able to change your jersey number anytime if it was available in a particular team, and every team had retired numbers.
    • You could play many seasons in CHL.
    • Actually being able affect your draft number by how you played, and then getting 3 draft interviews that decided your fate. You could clearly choose bad answers, if you wanted to bomb a certain interview.
    • Endorsements were better than what I've seen from NHL 21, getting your picture to NHL game cover, and other.
    • Overall it felt like a pretty polished and thought out experience, without many bugs.
    • If you wanted to be a journeyman, you could just basically tell GM to go to hell, and get traded.

Honestly, I would be happy if they just copy pasted Live the Life to current gen, and started building on that. Like adding cutscenes to all the plentiful Live the Life dialogue choices (at least compared to NHL 21).

Be A Pro is on the right track, but still has fatal flaws

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 11:32 AM PDT

Well, I don't know if I'm impressed or disappointed. On one hand, they've definitely put a ton of work into BaP, which I like for the most part. But there's still so many things that have been ignored, or poorly executed. I've created my character, played in the Mem Cup, got drafted 1st overall, and played my first 4 games in the NHL. Here's my thoughts so far.

    The good:

    • The new systems are neat. I like seeing my player off-ice. I like interacting with management, the press, and other players. I can't say I like the "Star" dialogue options (or the dialogue in general), but maybe some do. On-ice interactions are really cool too.
    • The UI got a nice facelift. I like seeing my points without going through 5 menus. I REALLY like being able to choose the length of each game with ease.
    • I heard you can become a captain now. Overdue, but nice to see.
    • The build-up to the draft was really cool. Good feature.

    The bad:

    • The new systems are extremely overused. Between every game is at least 2 meetings. In most on-ice meetings, you are being demanded of scoring points, otherwise, management rips you apart. Maybe I don't want to score a goal every game? I have 5 pts in 4 games, and Cybal frequently comments that I am performing "meh".
    • The rosters... are kinda super screwed up. Not sure what's going on there. EA said they improved AI trading - maybe by "improved" they mean "absolutely ruined"... We will see.
    • The draft feels rigged. I think this is by design, as you're obviously referred to as the "generational talent". I tried to get drafted 4th or 5th, but claimed 1st easily. This feels even weirder as it is the 2020 draft, so players like Laf and Byfield are bumped down a pick, so they play with teams that they shouldn't be playing with. Weird.
    • Being the generational talent. This is poorly executed. The commentary is great and all, but everything else feels wrong. You start at 68 OVR. That's not generational talent worthy. McDavid was an 85 OVR when he played for the Otters. Crosby was a 90 (+/- 2) in his first year. Laf isn't considered a generational talent and he's an 82. Hell, Nail Yakupov had a higher rating. If we are the generational talent, make it feel that way.
    • Your performance doesn't match commentary/management satisfaction. Like I said before, 5 pts in 4 games for a rookie is REALLY good. Meanwhile, I'm on blast by the coach and Cybal.
    • THEY DIDN'T TOUCH THE XP SYSTEM. This is arguably the worst thing about BaP over the years. It is probably the number 1 complaint about the mode. The XP system is terrible. Ever since they switched to the new "xp based on what you do in games" thing, it has been bad. I already know I'm going to have 99 wrist shot accuracy, 80 wrist shot power, 75 poise, 99 endurance, etc etc. It doesn't distribute properly. It will never distribute properly. This system needs to be erased.
      • Compounding on this, the training system is bad. Just let us allocate XP. The training system is so tedious and annoying, and unfortunately necessary if you'd like normal looking stats. You can set it to "auto", but that just makes the problem worse.

Okay, there it is. My thoughts.

    Agree?

Liking Be a pro so far, but the gameplay is a bit frustrating

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 06:39 AM PDT

I play wing and I force a lot of dump ins by taking away passing lanes in the neutral zone, but my defenders never win a fucking puck battle. Two vs one, the center in there as well and they come out and since the center is down low, it opens up the middle for easy goals and I get blamed for them. If I cover for the centerman, I get penalized if they score. If I stay in my position, I get penalized if they score. It's a no win situation. How do I make my defenders not suck in our end?

Also, my coach seems like a bitch. He yells at me for "letting them score" when my idiot linemate changes in the defensive zone and I've only just stepped onto the ice. I get blamed for everything

    Finally did it!

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 10:23 AM PDT

Big hits are kinda satisfying when it's often followed by a buried puck and 4 car pile up.

    BAP still didn't fix contracts

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 10:05 PM PDT

You'd think with all the hyping up they did for "revamping" be a pro, they'd have fixed the contract system and how no matter how well you do, you still only get 2 teams offering you contracts for 1/2 years with no way to negotiate or even look at the teams offering you a contract via a roster/line screen.

Just absolutely brutal and has been an ongoing issue with the mode for 3+ years, and has killed any chance for me to continue playing and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

NHL 21: Be a pro, what is the conversation bubble supposed to be and why can’t I access it yet?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 10:19 PM PDT

Be a pro, start in Europe, RANT.

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 06:11 PM PDT

Wow, what can I say... I was really looking forward to this years Be a pro. It looked on the surface to have something that for me as a European hockey fan had missed since I first started playing NHL, being able to start your career in Europe.

To be honest, I have not really followed the releases post-release and I just happened to come across the news about starting in Europe and got really happy. I really looked forward to playing with the team of my hometown, playing in the Swedish Hockey League, winning my team's first championship before "crossing the pond" to the NHL.

But wow, what the fuck is this.
You can only play in the play-off part of CHL. That's a bummer. But well okay, I guess we'll have to wait another 5 years before we can play like you can with the college leagues in Canada, etc.

    What the fuck #2.
You can only pick from the teams that have actually qualified for the CHL this season.
Since my team has had a hard time recently, we are not in it, even if we are one of the founding members of it.

I could have gotten with the fact that you could not play a whole season in Europe, but come on, give us the chance to pick what team we want, you have the license for them, WHY TF not.

    So yeah, kinda sad. :(

    Rosters

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 11:15 AM PDT

Is there a specific schedule that they usually follow for roster updates or is it just totally random? I want to do a Be a Pro or Franchise but I'm not gonna do it until they fix the rosters. The latest roster update actually removed some NHL players who are now totally gone from the game and then there is the Keith Kinkaid headshot fiasco (they used a picture of Joel Lundqvist instead of Keith Kinkaid). EA always does a really horrible job of updating rosters but it's just embarrassing sometimes when they remove one of your favourite players for no reason. Anyone know where to go to report these roster issues?

    BAP secondary positions

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 08:52 PM PDT

Who thought this was a good idea? I want to be a center because ive played enough ea to know its the best position to be. Especially on defense. But they make me choose a secondary position of winger. And then if Im good, they make me a first line winger instead of 2nd line center. Awesome. Fucking super cool. Turns out I actually didnt pick wing because its not as fun to me. No way to turn this off as far as I can tell. No way to ask my coach to make me my fucking position. Im gonna have to fucking start a d man so at least I know Ill never fully be happy instead of being yanked around by dumb coaches.

Not to mention how hard it torpedos my actual faceoff development for playing center if Im ever allowed to. Dumb. So dumb.

Is it created players or randomly generated players or both that take an insane amount of shots?

I remember hearing of this problem, but didn't remember the specifics of it.

Questions about the be a pro mode

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 10:51 AM PDT

I just finished up my first season and there are a couple things I couldn't find but might have missed.

    1. Is there no option to ask for a trade?

    2. Coach/GM doesn't tell me if the team has made a trade or a free agent signing.

    3. There isn't a news feed to tell me about transactions around the league? Or is it just the ticker on the bottom?

    4. No coach meeting in season 2 to tell me if my spot is assured or not.

Is this everyone's experience? Or am I missing an update or something?

    D to D One Timers

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 10:46 AM PDT

Anyone had any luck with a blue line one timer goal? If it doesn't get tipped or deflected I can't get any to go in at all. I understand not every shot can go in but my buddies and I have been testing it out with different classes (dd with the slapshot traits and one time wonder, and even a sniper with like ~94 accuracy and power) and traits and are probably 0 for 250 or more. High, low, short and far side. Snake bitten when it comes to them going right in. Anyone feel the same who runs D?
