Best way to develop a new player in franchise mode?

I recently got into NHL 21 and have had a ton of fun with it, but still don't fully understand how to develop prospects and rookie players properly in franchise mode. I just recently got 80 OVR med elite winger from a good draft pick along with 3 different gem players all in the 3rd-4th rounds, so I have a decent amount to build off of.

My question is, what steps should I take to maximize growth in the NHL ready rookie winger and the multiple high potential prospects I have saved up? I haven't understood how to develop properly in the past and just traded away many good prospects while they still had trade value because they weren't developing the first couple years.

Edit: Still just in free agency but I immediately signed the 80 OVR med elite before posting this because it said he was NHL ready, but not any of the later gems.

In previous years it typically comes out about now, but last year with Covid and everything it was delayed, but what's about this year? I haven't heard anything about it yet.

Option for shorter Season

I haven't bought the game since NHL19. I used to love the offline gameplay, but absolutely hate simming most of my season because I don't have the patience to play 82 games.

For NHL21, have they added an option for less regular season games yet?
