Deep Dive Play Test Part 1 Disparity Between AI and Human on All-Star Difficulty Posted: 24 Oct 2020 08:45 AM PDT No tl;dr you're supposed to read this all if you want to. As the title states this is a dive into the differences between AI and Human players on All-Star difficulty. This is a study I performed of my own volition, and was requested to make a post about after commenting some of my results on a post about puck control on this sub. In this part I will be looking specifically at skating, shooting vs goaltending sliders, and puck control. I have planned four parts to this Play Test with Part 2 being All-Star vs Pro difficulties, Part 3 All-Star vs Superstar difficulties, and Part 4 Raccoon's Recommended sliders. All information is gathered from Practice Mode. Part 4 will be gathered in Be a Pro. This started innocently enough when I wanted to practice zone entries for my be a pro character, since the AI defence behaves differently in NHL21 than in 20. I realized herein that the speed on All-Star seemed strange, being an Oilers fan I practised 1 on 2 playing as Connor McDavid. When I began, I noticed that players such as Adam Larsson, an average skater in the game (Average skating is defined as Acceleration and Speed of 84-86), could not only keep up with Connor McDavid, but actually outskate him. Which is a ludicrous thought as Larsson in reality is a low end of average skater in reality. The data follows: On All-Star difficulty with default skating settings (all set to 50), Larsson (acc 85, spd 86) was faster skating backwards than McDavid (acc 97, spd 97) skating forwards with the puck. I conducted two further tests: racing after the puck, and McDavid Chasing Larsson with the puck. All resulted in Larsson being much faster than McDavid. This led to the beginning of slider changing. I wanted to even the playing field, so to speak. I began changing the skating sliders 5 points at a time in favour of the human player. Skating sliders "evened out" at -10 to AI AND +10 to Human. This means that to my eye, McDavid was consistently faster in all situations than Larsson. I corroborated my results by attempting the same situations with skaters of similar skating ability: Draisaitl (acc 87, spd 88) and Nurse (acc 87, spd 87). As expected that the players skated at approximately the same level in all situations. The ultimate result of my first experiment means that to enhance the difficulty of the game, All-Star difficulty gives the AI 20 extra points to all skating sliders. This ultimately results in sliders being horrendously unequal when they are set to 50/50, which in reality is AI 70 vs Human 50. To balance gameplay I took 10 points off the AI and added 10 to Human. I then thought that if the disparity is that large in the skating column, how bad could it be elsewhere. The obvious second place to look was Puck Control (AI 30, Human 30). I had noticed through my Be a Pro playthrough that the AI has the ability to strip the puck instantly and effectively with savage, instant poke checks, but more glaringly when they skate towards your stick they will leave with the puck 9 times out of 10. I also noticed something similar through my skating tests. So I applied the same theory, -10 to AI, +10 to Human. The results were immediate and disappointing. Connor McDavid (PC 96) held onto the puck better, but it was still difficult to get it from Nurse (PC 86). Its understandable to me that the puck shouldn't be EASY to strip off a player, but still frustrating to watch the defender bump into my forward and take the puck, while I had to use well-timed pokes and stick lifts to at least strip the puck off the defender's stick. As a result I changed the slider edits to -15 to AI and +5 to human. This resulted in both sides having a difficult time stripping the puck, while it was at the very least possible for either side to do it. The final area I tested (after scoring 3 goals in hundred's of attempts) was to balance out the goal scoring. This is a bit trickier as it involves two conflicting slider groups in Shooting (50, 45, 50, 40, 50) and Goaltending (50 across the board) and I admit these results are not perfect and I fully intend to go further into it in Part 4. This also takes more effort as I not only have to balance out Human goal scoring, but also AI goalscoring, so I have to spend just as much time on offence as defence. I again started by applying the -10/+10 theory which was instantly flawed. It resulted in a Goal Scoring sliders not +20 in favor of the Human, but rather +40. This wasn't even the biggest issue with this. Shooting accuracy below 50 is wildly innaccurate for humans, and below 40 for AI. Therefore these Goal Scoring Equalizing sliders are a touch experimental. I found that a baseline of 54, 54, 54, 49, 59 was a better place to start. This, however, is based off of my prior experience with NHL 20. At this baseline, wrist shots are accurate in over 50% of cases, slapshots less so, but slapshots are harder, making up for the lack of accuracy, while one-timers tend to go where you want them to and can be devastating but not game breaking. Goaltending I kept at 50 across the board. From this point I could begin looking for the +20 in favour of Human which throughout All-Star seems to be the magic number for evening out player abilities. I began with the -10 AI +10 Human formula, but that resulted in a below average goalie (Smith 82 OVR) making amazing saves more often than not, while the AI scored, albeit with difficulty. Goal Scoring is not shooting, and it is not Goaltending. It is the result of both stats being compared against one another (I did not have this problem with Puck Control, as it was the instant "skate into the puck and pick it off the stick" that I sought to equalize). +20 in favour of human had to be split across both sets of sliders. Starting with -5 AI +5 Human on both sets of sliders resulted in similarly accurate shooting (49/59, 44/54, and 54/64) while the AI could more easily score goals (goaltending 45/55). This being experimental, and a little more difficult to explain than the other two cases, I can merely state that I ended on 38 AI to 50 Human (-12 AI, +0 Human). This gives Goal Scoring a differential of +22 in favour of Human, but results, at the moment, in a more equal ability to score goals between AI and Human players. (Final Note: McDavid and Draisaitl on offence, Nurse and Bear on defence for both AI and Human for testing purposes) [link] [comments] |

Is Ian Mitchell of the Blackhawks in the game? Posted: 24 Oct 2020 10:16 AM PDT Was starting up a franchise with the Hawks and wanted to insert Ian Mitchell into the lineup, he isn't on the newest roster updates, even in the AHL...is he out there somewhere and i'm too stupid to find him or is he someone I have to create? BAP teammate CPU vs Opponent CPU Posted: 24 Oct 2020 09:55 AM PDT I'm starting to notice that teammate CPU is pretty good compared to Opponent CPU, they drive down the ice with ease and have great puck movement and shoot normal shots and rarely shoot one timers. Opponent CPU skate down the ice on my end and do nothing with the puck, they just wait for the perfect one timer and they always miss the net when they just have a normal shot attempt. I faced a total of 2 shots in the final 2 periods. I faced a total of 9 shots all game which is hell to play in, so boring and uneventful.I'm trying to fix sliders but holy cow the AI are terrible. Posted: 24 Oct 2020 07:27 AM PDT Has anyone ever done this? Or even done it this year? I'd like to do one just here and there to break up my main Be A Pro but wondered how it was. Do they still expect you to score goals all the time like they do for the more traditional player types? Or do they have goals toward the enforcer role? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Oct 2020 07:26 AM PDT I've been playing this game since 98 and buying the game on release day almost every year for the last 15 years. I was excited to buy on release this year due to the new features, but held off because of the bugs people have reported in this sub. Is it worth it to buy now or should I continue to wait? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Oct 2020 07:06 PM PDT I just bought the game today. The servers were down for about 8 hours. Then finally get on and me and my buddy go to join an EASHL game and the VERY FIRST GAME I get in and he gets left behind. THEY HAVEN'T FIXED THE ISSUES THEY HAD LAST YEAR. EA is straight trash. I can't wait until they no longer have a monopoly on sports games and competitors run them out of business. TRASH. Update: first two games. [link] [comments] |
Living up to the grinder player role Posted: 23 Oct 2020 10:11 PM PDT |
Posted: 23 Oct 2020 07:35 PM PDT The biggest problem that this series has is how little customization you really get. EA tells us "here's our game and play it how we made it." Want to start a created team? Here's OUR logos. Customizing jerseys? Pick what WE give you. Want to update rosters? Wait until we release one or individually go through each player yourself. Roster sharing would truly make the game so much better. Start up a franchise and want to authentic draft class? Nah, we are gonna add in some bullshit stud players to mess up the roster. Playing a Be A Pro career. Start as a 70 overall 1st overall pick. You can only get experience to level your character if you play the game our way. Why don't you give us the ability to at LEAST change the rate we earn exp? When has a 1st overall player in rated 70-72 overall? Oh you want to change your skating style DURING your career? Nope, hockey players only skate the same way for 20 years. Lastly, here's our SHITTY music choices. Either have music or nothing. Why can't they just add in the ability to use spotify or whatever streaming service? Every other sports game has roster sharing, download able rookie draft classes, creator your OWN logos, etc. This game still doesn't compare to NHL 14. It's a STEP in the right direction. Posted: 24 Oct 2020 06:04 AM PDT Hi I badly want to start my franchise mode but I dont want to manually correct the rosters with all the recent draft picks in their proper teams. Any suggestions or any idea when the next roster update is? [link] [comments] |

Have the fixed anything with franchise mode yet? Posted: 23 Oct 2020 01:43 PM PDT |
Posted: 23 Oct 2020 11:09 PM PDT I think a tendencies sliders would be better because I want my BAP goalie to be way better than the what I'm getting, The CPU goes for that perfect shot too much and execute perfectly when it happens, I'm not the greatest goalie whatsoever but them only going for one timers is annoying. I want more shots from near the blue line or side. I'm fine with close shots until it's an easy cross crease that's a guarantee goal. They just need to shoot the puck more on low percentage shots. I rather have 24 of 28 than a 14 of 18. It'll increase our grades significantly and our line score. It'll make games more eventful than waiting 12 minutes for the first shot which is a easy one timer. Let me know what y'all think Edit: the use for the tendency slider will be like shooting before a one timer pass, AI defense blocking the middle, etc [link] [comments] |
Is there a trick for developing defence prospects? Posted: 23 Oct 2020 03:27 PM PDT Other than drafting high, I can't get solid dmen. I can get them to max out at about 85-88 ovr, but even then they'll maybe put up 20-25 points in a season. I know it shouldn't really be my coaching staff, because I've had guys like Oscar Klefbom, Torey Krug & Dougie Hamilton come in from FA and put up 60-80 point seasons. I'm still playing 20 for what it's worth. [link] [comments] |
