Getting my ass kicked on All Star difficulty because the AI opponent doesn’t have to play real defense.

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 11:49 AM PDT

It took me a few days to realize this, but I'm so sick of seeing it every game. We all know the 95% passing is bullshit, but the real problem is the AI's ability to simply stand in front of your skater to take the puck away.

When I position myself in front of the AI, I have 3 choices: poke check, stick lift, or hit. All three of those carry risks and rewards, notably either a turnover or a penalty. But when I poke check, or stick lift, I don't just automatically gain possession. I have to still chase the puck down or hope a teammate is there to recover. Same with a body check, except I also risk being out of position.

Compare this to the AI: very rarely do they poke check me or stick lift me or hit me. Instead, they just skate into the puck and immediately take possession. This is frustrating for a number of reasons, but the biggest one is that i can't do the same thing. I fully believe that when a game provides a single player mode to emulate a multiplayer one, the biggest mistake they can make is to give the AI abilities unavailable to the player.

This "mechanic" takes all the risk out of defending for the AI. They're not going to take a penalty or end up out of position because they aren't doing anything. The mechanic has existed in the game for some time, but this year it just seems so egregious. It's frustrating, it's lazy, and it makes the game less fun.

So what happened to scouting in Franchise mode?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 07:25 AM PDT

I don't exactly know what I'm doing wrong here, but my scouts seem to be completely useless in NHL21, they haven't got anything on any player in the first seven rounds but did scout a few weirdoes in the 400 to 1000 CS raking range.

Do I have to manually assign every scout? Is there a way to make them automatically do it? This wasn't an issue in last year's game.

    Custom Team Franchise Mode

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 06:43 AM PDT

If you make a custom team for franchise mode, do you replace and NHL team or do you do like an expansion draft? Also if you do draft then how do you pick minor league teams?

    Expansion Team AHL Division

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 07:31 AM PDT

The AHL expansion team was automatically put into the AHL's North Division. So that division has 9 teams, while the Pacific Division sits at 7 teams. Did they add the option to realign the AHL Divisions and I missed it? If they didn't add it, they need to.

    Disc Cannot be read (ps4)

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 09:59 AM PDT

I haven't seen this much, but is anyone else getting issues with the disc version of NHL 21? Im on my 2nd replacement, 9/10 times i put the disc in to play the game, I get "Disc cannot be read" error. The disc is clean and new, and I've had replacements with the same issue.

The guy at GameStop said others had the same issue, Is this common?

    Anyone figure out a fix?

    How to obtain TP/SP?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 09:40 AM PDT

Is there a way to determine when you are close to obtain any TP or SP ? I havent played NHL in 5 years and haven't figured out if it's a level up or if it's kind of random.

    Pk on be a pro

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 09:23 AM PDT

I'm playing pretty good defence averaging around 75% every game and I'm +18 after 51 games. How good do I have to perform to be on the pk ? The progress bar on the line score remains at 0 after every single game. Do i have to be a defensive god and block 20 shots every game only to be on the second pk? I don't get it.

Players that are either kicked for “poor team play” or that quit the game early (especially goalies) should be penalized and put on a temporary ban.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 04:37 PM PDT

Call of Duty had something similar to this back in Black Ops II Ranked Play. If you quit a match you should be placed on a ban for like 2 minutes in which you can't join another match, in any mode. Quitters suck. Don't quit.

Defending the cross crease goal strategies [GUIDE]

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 02:51 PM PDT

I've always been a competitive versus player in NHL. This year I started off horribly, 0-5-1 with most games being 10-9 type high scoring games due to the cross crease. If you mention the cross crease goal people seem to get mad an suggest you suck at defense. This isn't true, you just play defense differently and now need to adjust for this game.

Since I changed my strategy I haven't lost and I rarely see the cross crease goal now. I'll list the settings I've changed and then explain why each one is needed:

    Turn Off Auto Back-Skate

    Adjust AI to never pinch

put less pressure on the neutral zone

The key is to almost never allow 2 on 1s this year. In years past we could get away with them, but its too easy to score one this year, so try to never allow it. Turning off pinching at the blueline will help make sure your AI is less aggressive and you'll see less 2 on 1s. For the 1-2-2 Red, this might not be needed, but by default you have the 1-2-2 Blue (their blue line) which means we're taking a bit of pressure off.

When the 2 on 1 does happen, having auto back-skate off is critical. Often when you're controlling the defenseman the pass 2 on 1 is simple because you're moving too slow and not in the lane. By turning this off you can easily dive or kneel to cut off the pass.

Another key this year is pokecheck is back in full force (I could see them nurfing it maybe?). Last year, poke checking was much more dangerous in terms of getting penalties. This year, with my forwards coming back, I spammmm the poke check and never take penalties. That was a big adjustment from nhl 20 where the stick lift was king.

    Hopefully these strategies help!
